I have started planning my latest house number commission for the front gate of a holiday home nestled in the lovely Breede River Valley. I am using River Glass mosaic tiles due to their waterproof nature and colour suitability. After careful planning and layout, I am ready to start laying tiles on the mesh using this technique. This mosaic technique allows me to glue the paper numbers on the wood temporarily and then laying a fiberglass mesh to mosaic over the letters. Once the tiles are glued to the mesh, I will remove the mesh with tiles attached, scrape off the paper and securely glue the mesh back on the wood board. This saves me time and allows me to “copy” the numbers without actually having to draw anything on the wood, which would take a long time.

The client brief was to use a soft blue to match the sky, brown to match the house walls and purple for the bougainvillea flowers. Here are some progress photos of the mosaic house number below:
